The YouTube Channel Audit: A Checklist Before You Monetize

A structured review of the things that block monetization, suppress revenue, or fail review — run it before you apply, not after you are rejected.

Most creators apply for monetization, get rejected, and only then examine their channel properly. Running the audit first costs an afternoon and avoids a 21-day wait.

Section 1: account-level blockers

Any single item here stops your application regardless of content quality.

  1. Two-step verification is enabled on the Google account that owns the channel.
  2. No active Community Guidelines strikes.
  3. No active copyright strikes.
  4. You are located in a region where the Partner Program operates.
  5. You do not have a previously disabled AdSense account associated with you.
  6. Your channel is not designated as made for kids at channel level unless that is genuinely accurate — this restricts monetization features substantially.

Section 2: content review

Open your ten most-viewed videos and your five most recent. A reviewer will look at roughly this sample.

  • For each, can you state in one sentence what unique value it provides? If not for most of them, address that before applying.
  • Is any video built primarily from footage you did not create? This is the leading rejection cause.
  • Are any videos near-identical to each other apart from a swapped variable? Templated mass production is explicitly targeted.
  • Does your channel have one identifiable theme a stranger could name in thirty seconds?
  • Is the spoken content genuinely yours, rather than text-to-speech over stock footage?

Section 3: advertiser suitability

This is stricter than the Community Guidelines and catches many compliant channels.

  • Profanity in titles, thumbnails, or the opening seconds of videos.
  • Violence as a focus rather than incidental — relevant for gaming channels in particular.
  • Controversial or sensitive subject matter handled without editorial care.
  • Content involving firearms, drugs, gambling, or adult themes.
  • Check the monetization icon on your existing videos in Studio. A channel where many videos are limited is unlikely to pass review.

Section 4: metadata hygiene

  • Do your thumbnails accurately represent the video content?
  • Do titles describe what the video actually delivers, without engineered search terms unrelated to the content?
  • Are descriptions written for humans rather than stuffed with keywords?
  • Is your channel description clear about what you cover?
  • Are your channel banner and profile image present and legible?
  • Is there a channel trailer for new visitors?

Section 5: revenue settings creators forget

These do not affect approval, but they materially affect income once you are approved. Many creators leave money unclaimed here for months.

  1. Enable mid-roll ads on all videos over eight minutes. This is the single largest RPM lever available.
  2. Turn on all ad formats unless you have a specific reason not to.
  3. Enable ads on your back catalogue, not just new uploads — Studio allows bulk changes.
  4. Set up channel memberships if you qualify.
  5. Enable Super Thanks.
  6. Complete your AdSense tax form. Skipping this causes maximum default withholding.
  7. Confirm your AdSense payee name matches your identification exactly.

Section 6: the library check

  • Are your watch hours within the rolling 12-month window, or did they accumulate longer ago?
  • Have you deleted videos recently? Deleting removes their watch hours from your total.
  • Are all counted videos public? Private and unlisted videos do not contribute.
  • Do you have playlists organising your content into viewing sequences?
  • Do end screens on your popular videos route viewers to your longer content?

Running it on a schedule

This is not a one-time exercise. Policy changes, videos accumulate, and settings quietly reset. Running sections three through six once a quarter catches revenue leakage that would otherwise persist for years.

Every item in section five is money you have already earned and are not collecting. Start there.
